Bibliography

Definition:
A printed list of references.

The aim of a bibliography is to detail as comprehensively as possible the literature covering a specific subject area. This is irrespective of format or type and whether the material is present in a library. The bibliography should be structured by subject and according to criteria of form.

A bibliography enables the user to learn what literature is available in a specific subject area, but not where to find this literature. The user will need to carry out a further search on - for example - a library catalogue.

Increasingly, bibliographies are also published as electronic databases.
